I could really get into this blogging stuff.....

As part of my customized google homepage, I receive Library Stuff (a weblog by Steven M. Cohen through Information Today, Inc.) Anyway today the My Librarian Blog Reading List...of course it will change, caught my eye. Cohen also gives a brief explanation of what a recommended list should include. I have just glanced at a few, but it is always nice to have some recommendations when there is so much out there to look at! He also links to Blake's "10 Blogs to read in 2006" so I will have to check some of those out as well. The Librarian's Guide to Etiquette blog is the one I think I am definitely going to check out first! All right, well I will get back to you when I take a more detailed look at some of these blogs!

For now I am going to go figure out what OPML stands for...don't laugh I really don't know.

What scientists really look like!

Someone passed along this website to me, and it got me thinking..... What a neat idea to have the classroom projects put online! This makes it way easier for parents to get involved and even make comments about their childs work. Daily blogs by teachers so parents can log in and read exactly what their child did in class that day? Then I started thinking how this would relate to libraries....well it would be neat to have the classes websites linked somehow through the libraries webpage. Or even do a spotlight once a week of a classroom that is displaying their work online. Does anyone know of a library that already does this? Or other classrooms that have projects online?

Anyway, like I said this website was passed along to me and I thought it was neat so I am now passing it along to you!

Googlization of Libraries

Last night I went to the Follet Lecture at Dominican. Professor Valauskos started the lecture with a fictional romp into the future where the Harold Washington Library was now the Harold Washington Homes, a housing development. Also the New York Public Library was a museum for the book. (This was in the year 2015) He then sped through a brief history of technology of today into the future. A lot of this was lost on me, I had trouble keeping up and therefore had trouble envisioning any of the future of technologies.
What did catch me was when he was discussing the avatar. How weird to think that instead of dealing with a person at the reference desk we may one day deal with a computerized version of that person while bopping along with our I-LIB (a version of the I-POD with a libraries complete catlogue on it). I just can't picture it, no matter how hard I try. Is it just me being stubborn? Or am I trying to hold on to the idea that people will always need other people? Sure all of what Professor Valauskos talked about sounded neat, maybe even a little interesting. I like that all of these new ideas are bringing us together in new ways, but I don't like that we are even discussing the idea that our libraries need to go away because of it. I'd like to end this with the same hope that Professor Valauskos did when he said, "Google is on our side, " but then I have to go and question why there are even sides at all.
